Do I need to redesign my website or just fix it?

This is one of the most common questions we hear.

Your website has been around for a few years. Something feels a bit off. You are not sure if it needs a full overhaul or just a few small fixes.

It is a fair question. And the honest answer is: it depends.

But there are some very clear signs that point you in the right direction. Let me walk you through them.

First, what is the difference?

A fix means you update specific things. You change some images. You rewrite a page. You tweak the colours. The structure of your site stays the same.

A redesign means starting fresh. New structure, new layout, new page flow, new foundations. It is a bigger investment, but sometimes it is the only thing that will actually work.

The key question is this: Is your website underperforming because of small surface issues? Or is the foundation itself the problem?

Signs you probably just need a fix

Some problems are small and easy to address.

You have new services that are not on your site yet. Your photos are old or poor quality. Your contact details have changed. Your copy sounds outdated.

These are all things you can fix without a full redesign. A good web team can update those quickly.

You might also just need better SEO. Maybe your pages are not structured well for search. That can often be improved without rebuilding the whole site.

Signs you need a full redesign

Some problems go deeper. Here is when a redesign is the right call.

1. Your site does not work well on mobile. Over 70% of web traffic now comes from phones and tablets. If your site looks broken or tiny on a phone screen, a fix is not enough. Mobile responsiveness needs to be built into the foundation.

2. It is slow. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, you are losing people. Google also penalises slow sites in search rankings. Speed issues often come from old code and outdated structure and they cannot always be patched.

3. You are embarrassed to share it. This is the big one. If you hesitate to send someone to your website, that is a signal you should not ignore. Your website should be your best salesperson, not something you apologise for.

4. It no longer reflects who you are. Has your business grown or changed? If your website still describes what you were doing three years ago, there is a disconnect. Visitors can feel when a website does not match the business behind it.

5. It is not bringing in enquiries. Traffic with no results is a sign of a bigger problem. It usually means the structure, messaging, or user journey is broken. A few small fixes will not solve that.

6. It is painful to update. If adding a new page or changing a photo requires a developer every time, your site is working against you. A modern website should be easy for you to manage.

The honest test

Sit down and open your website on your phone.

Can you tell immediately who this business is for? Can you find the contact page in under 10 seconds? Does it feel professional and trustworthy?

Ask a friend who has never seen it to do the same. What do they say?

If there is friction or confusion, a redesign is likely the better investment. A patch job on a broken foundation does not hold for long.

What about the cost?

A redesign is an investment. But so is keeping a website that drives people away.

Every week you wait with an underperforming site is another week of missed opportunities. Another potential client who clicked away and chose someone else.

Done right, a new website pays for itself, through better conversions, stronger SEO, and a professional image that earns trust before you even speak to someone.
