People mix these up all the time.
A client gets a beautiful new logo. They put it on their website, their business card, their Instagram. And then they wait for things to happen.
But nothing changes much.
That is because a logo is not a brand. They are very different things. And once you understand that difference, everything about how you show up online starts to make more sense.
Let me explain.
What is a logo?
A logo is a visual mark. It is the symbol or wordmark that represents your business at a glance.
Think of the golden arches. The apple with a bite taken out. The swoosh.
A logo helps people recognise you. It creates a visual shortcut in someone’s mind. When they see it, they know it is you.
That is important. But it is only the beginning.

What is a brand?
A brand is everything else.
It is how your business feels to people. It is the story you tell, the words you use, the colours and the fonts, and the tone of your emails.
It is also the experience someone has when they work with you. The feeling they get when they visit your website. The impression left after they read your Instagram caption.
A brand is not something you design once. It is something you build over time.
Think of it this way
A logo is like someone’s face.
You recognise a face instantly. But a face alone does not tell you if a person is kind, funny, smart, or trustworthy. You get that from spending time with them.
Your brand is the whole person. The values, the voice, the way they show up in the room.
A great logo with no brand behind it is just a pretty face. People will notice it. But they will not remember it.
What does a brand actually include?
A brand is made up of several things working together.
First, there is your visual identity. That includes your logo, yes, but also your colours, your fonts, your photography style, and how everything looks across your platforms.
Then there is your brand voice. This is how you write and speak. Are you warm and conversational? Bold and direct? Calm and expert? Your voice should feel consistent everywhere, from your website copy to your Instagram captions.
There is also your brand story. This is the why behind your business. What you believe. Who you are for. What makes you different.
And finally, there is the experience you create. How you respond to enquiries. How your services are delivered. How clients feel when they work with you.
All of that together is your brand.
Why does this matter for your business?
Because people do not buy logos. They buy feelings.
They buy trust. They buy familiarity. They buy the sense that this business gets them.
When your brand is clear and consistent, people remember you. They tell their friends about you. They come back to you.
When your brand is unclear, even if your logo looks great, people feel something is off. They cannot explain it. But they move on.
So which comes first?
The brand strategy comes first. Always.
Before you design a logo, you need to know who you are, who you are talking to, and what you want people to feel.
The logo grows out of that. The colours come from that. The fonts, the imagery, the words, all of it follows the strategy.
When a brand is built this way, everything makes sense together. Nothing feels random.
That is what we do at Aella. We build brands from the inside out, starting with the story, then the strategy, then the visuals.
You do not need to start over
If you already have a logo and a website, that is okay.
Start by looking at your brand through your customer’s eyes.
Does your website feel like you? Is your voice consistent across platforms? Does someone who finds you online immediately understand what you do and who you help?
If something feels off, it is usually a brand issue, not a logo issue.
And the good news is, it is fixable.
